04 Dec SPARKLY XMAS TIPS
10 Commandments of Safe Xmas lighting
Who doesn’t love their Xmas lights! Right?! BUT there are some DO’s and DONT’s to know.
|
|||
1 |
Lego-like sculptures of double adaptors iare dangerous. Use power boards with over-load protection available at all good retail outlets. |
||
2 | Using multiple high-powered lights can overload your electric circuits. Test your safety switch & smoke detectors.
3 | Switch off & unplug your lights before putting them up or watering a live Xmas tree. Yep, its happened!
4 | Outdoor 240v lighting – check the IP (weatherproof) rating. Must be at least IP23.
5 | Go with extra-low-voltage lights (12v or 24v). They’re the safest in preventing electric shock & fires form over heating. LED lights are becoming more and more popular. Not only are the colours vibrant, LEDs are power efficient and don’t heat up like the old style lights do.
6 | “Great internet deals” on lights from overseas may not meet Australian safety standards. Always buy from a reputable shop & look for the approval number eg Q12345 or compliance mark. | If in doubt..throw it out! |
|
7 | Check your Xmas lights have insulated pins. If not, they don’t meet the latest safety requirements. | Kidsafe Queensland |
|
8 |
Check for any product recalls. |
||
9 | Throw out damaged lights or leads. If there are any beaks or nicks in the insulation that covers the copper wires, throw them out. Don’t run leads anywhere they might get damaged or cut. Be mindful of the kids.
10 | Turn your lights off before going to bed or leaving your house. |
